Saftey Patrol

Hey folks, I'm working on an update about the ride logistics that will include a queue sheet, route notes, and the final start/finish location (it's moving about a mile east to a spot that will be more comfortable to lounge at after finishing), but I wanted to throw out a few quick notes about safety.

First off, it needs to be reiterated that there is no support for this ride which means there is no rescue party available if you can't finish for some reason.  That said, nobody wants to be forgotten about if they are curled up in a ditch in the grips of a nuclear bonk.  Here's the system we'll use to make sure that at least someone who cares will know you're having a bad day.

- At the start I will give out a card with contact information, if you aren't going to make it to the finish by 11pm, or finish at all, you need to send a text/vmail/email to let us know.
- We'll collect your cel phone number (assuming you're taking one) and one emergency contact number. That person should not be your mom in Omaha who has no idea what you're up to, make sure it's someone who knows you're on another ridiculously long ride in the middle of nowhere.
- If we haven't heard from you by 11pm we'll call/text your cel number.
- If we can't get in touch with you then we'll call your emergency contact and let them know that you haven't been heard from you, if they don't answer we'll leave a voice mail.
- At this point we'll wish you good luck and hope you made it home safely.

Second, there will be various hunting seasons in effect during the race, most notably it's the opening day for pheasants and some furry critters, so wearing some blaze orange is advisable. Deer bow hunting will be open but those guys are usually pretty aware of what they are aiming at.

Lastly the 'best' part of the ride, the Cheese Country Trail, is an actively used ATV route.  In my experience the ATV folks have been generally polite out there, but it's good to be aware that you'll be sharing the trail with fast moving and possibly inebriated objects on that stretch of the ride.

Safety patrol signing off.
